What Is the Best Treatment for a Double Chin? Kybella vs. Neck Lift

A double chin is not always caused by excess fat. In some people, the concern is primarily fat beneath the chin, while in others it is related to loose skin, neck bands, or changes in the underlying tissues. Understanding what is creating the fullness is the first step in choosing the most appropriate treatment.

How Kybella Treats a Double Chin

Kybella may be a good option when the main concern is fat under the chin, also called submental fat. It is an injectable treatment used to reduce moderate to severe fullness in this specific area.

Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a copy of a substance the body already makes to break down fat. It is approved only for fat under the chin.

Kybella may be considered when there is:

  • A defined pocket of fat beneath the chin
  • Good skin elasticity
  • Mild or minimal skin looseness
  • Fullness that does not improve enough with diet or exercise
  • A preference for a non-surgical treatment
  • Time for gradual results over multiple sessions

Kybella is best suited for targeted fat reduction under the chin when the skin can adjust well as the fullness decreases.

Sessions are about 3 months apart. The number of sessions depends on how much fat is there, and we give you an estimate on the first visit. Loose skin, visible neck bands, or a weak chin make a poor candidate for Kybella, because removing the fat can leave the neck looking emptier rather than tighter.

At ASI Medical Spa, located inside Adara Surgical Institute, either Shreena, our nurse practitioner, or Dr. Dhaliwal does the injecting. We offer Kybella less often than we used to because of its cost. Chin (submental) liposuction removes the same fat in one procedure, is often the better value, and we do it here.

When a Neck Lift May Be a Better Option

A neck lift may be a better option when the double chin concern is caused by loose skin, neck bands, deeper tissue laxity, or a less defined neck contour. These concerns usually cannot be corrected by fat reduction alone.

A neck lift may be considered when there is:

  • Loose or hanging neck skin
  • Prominent vertical neck bands
  • Significant skin laxity
  • Fullness below the jawline with poor neck definition
  • Heavier tissue under the chin
  • A desire for more noticeable contouring
  • A need to address both skin and deeper neck structures

A neck lift involves surgery and recovery time. It may be more appropriate when the goal is to reshape the neck contour rather than reduce a smaller pocket of fat.

A neck lift usually combines three steps. Fat is removed by liposuction or through a small incision under the chin. The platysma (the vertical bands) is tightened. Loose skin is then trimmed through incisions placed by the ears. Some patients need only two of the three.

Results and Recovery: Kybella vs Neck Lift

Kybella and neck lift surgery differ in both recovery and the type of results they provide. The right treatment depends on the cause of the fullness, your goals, and how much downtime you are comfortable with.

Kybella Recovery and Results

Kybella is performed with injections and typically requires little downtime, although swelling is expected after each treatment. Because the body gradually clears the treated fat cells, results develop over several weeks, and many patients need multiple sessions. Kybella reduces fat beneath the chin but does not tighten loose skin or correct neck bands.

Neck Lift Recovery and Results

A neck lift is a surgical procedure performed under anesthesia and requires a longer recovery than Kybella. Swelling, bruising, tightness, and soreness are expected during the early stages of healing. A compression garment is worn full time, about 22 hours a day, for 7 to 14 days, then at night only until week 3 or 4. As these symptoms improve, the neck contour becomes more defined. Unlike Kybella, a neck lift can address loose skin, excess fat, and neck bands in a single procedure.

Risks and Who Should Not Have These Treatments

Kybella swelling is real. It is the worst in the first 2 to 3 days and settles over 1 to 2 weeks. Less often, the injection temporarily affects the nerve that controls the lower lip, and the smile is uneven for weeks to months while it recovers. Rarely, the skin over the treated area breaks down. Kybella is not used on infected skin or during pregnancy.

A neck lift carries the risks of surgery in this area. Bleeding under the skin, infection, visible scars, and numbness under the chin or near the ears can occur, and numbness can take months to fade. Smokers must stop before and after surgery, and we set the exact dates at the consult. Chin liposuction shares these risks.

Choosing the Most Appropriate Treatment

At Adara Surgical Institute, patients have access to surgical and non-surgical options. Because ASI Medical Spa is located within our surgical center, treatment recommendations are based on what will best address the underlying cause of a double chin, whether that is fat beneath the chin, loose skin, or changes in the deeper tissues.

Patients who are good candidates for Kybella can receive treatment at ASI Medical Spa. When a neck lift is likely to provide a better result, surgery can be performed in our fully accredited, on- site surgical suite without the need for referral to another practice.

FAQs

Can Kybella fix loose skin under the chin?

Kybella reduces fat under the chin, but it does not tighten loose skin or correct neck bands. If loose skin is the main concern, a neck lift or another skin-tightening option may be more appropriate.

Is a neck lift better than Kybella?

A neck lift may be better when the concern involves loose skin, neck bands, deeper tissue laxity, or more advanced neck aging. Kybella may be better when the main concern is a smaller pocket of fat under the chin and the skin has good elasticity.

Can Kybella and a neck lift be combined?

Sometimes, but not every patient needs both. Treatment planning depends on how much fat, loose skin, and neck banding are present. In some cases, one option may be enough. In others, a staged or combined approach may be discussed.

How do I know if my double chin is fat or loose skin?

An evaluation is the best way to tell. Fat, loose skin, neck bands, chin projection, and jawline structure can all affect the area under the chin. Once the cause is clear, Kybella, a neck lift, or another option can be recommended more accurately.

Is chin liposuction an option instead of Kybella?

Often it is the better one. If the skin is firm and the pad is more than modest, liposuction removes the fat in a single procedure, and the total cost is usually lower than a series of injections.
