Early Treatment is Key to Success

The good news is that more than 90% of oral cancer cases are treated successfully. This is because dentists can catch the signs of oral cancer early, especially if they screen their patients at least once each year. If you’re at higher risk of oral cancer (for instance, if you smoke, regularly drink alcohol, are over 40 years old, have had an HPV infection, or have a family history of oral cancer), you should be screened more often.

In general, it’s a good idea to examine your own mouth about once a month for early warning signs of oral cancer. Many instances of oral cancer and other diseases don’t hurt, so you can’t solely rely on pain as an indicator. Look for suspicious lumps or sores, or tissue that’s an irregular color. The sooner you have it treated, the more likely your outcome will be a good one!
